Background on Outdoor Africa

Outdoor Africa was started in 2009 by Hayden Elliott from South Africa and Peter Kummerfeldt from the USA. Hayden and Peter both share a passion for Africa and its people, and it is this common thread which brought them together to start one of the most progressive  safari and travel companies in Africa.

Outdoor Africa is dedicated to the protection of the environment by supporting effective community partnerships and sustainable tourism projects. A rapidly increasing population and pressure on declining land resources add up to a formidable challenge throughout Africa; conventional conservation practices are failing to halt a decline in wildlife and environmental degradation.

However, there are also positive signs and a recent shift towards Community Based Tourism is gaining acceptance in Africa as a means of poverty reduction in remote areas. This model is one where communities assume the responsibility to discourage alternative land use, such as unsustainable agricultural practices and become involved in tourism initiatives and projects to earn an income and to uplift themselves through responsible tourism. The income that the communities earn from tourism can improve schools, clinics and ensure safe water supplies. This formula, often difficult to achieve can provide an unequivocal win-win situation for all parties concerned.

At Outdoor Africa we believe that we can offer you the best possible safari experience available today, whilst supporting conservation and community projects holistically through your support.
